I found myself headed to work on the train this morning; feeling a bit… not overwhelmed… but ‘awkward.’ Life’s pulling in so many directions. More issues continue to rise and I feel increasingly worn out - as if the enemy somehow discovered a secret entrance unaware to me and was siphoning my energy. An internal battle was being waged - for my joy.
I attempted to rationalize it away: I did stay up all night working on a video project that was due. When the ‘tired’ hits so does crankiness and sluggishness. But this seemed different. I felt this siphoning before I pulled the all-nighter. And pastor just talked yesterday about how we need to break through the barriers of opposition in our lives. So I pressed through the ‘tired’ and prayed. I didn’t ‘feel’ any different. But then a desire began to swell up within me.
I reached in my bag and pulled out a book - my book - the one God told me to write. A title came to mind and I realized what was coming next. Have you ever had to take your own advice? I flipped through the pages until I came to what was singing within me. And this is what I read:
Your Word is My Life
I realize this now…
How I have no purpose nor power without you LORD
Your Word is my life!
You placed Eternity within me
Now nothing bound by time will satisfy
Not money, nor clothes
Not houses or cars
Not prestige and fame nor worldly power and stars…
Only You LORD can fill my heart and mind and soul…
Your Word is my life!
May I live in it, basking in its glory!
May Your Presence live through its written power
Living in the realm of my being!
Nothing will satisfy, save Your Word in I…
Then You can bring everything You desire for me
All earthly things are secondary
Because Your Word is my life!
Transition: Breaking Through the Barriers, P. 103
The first line grabbed me. Everything hinges on us realizing things for what they truly are. Only then can we act instead of simply reacting to situations and circumstance. I stood humbled that God would help me with the very words given to help others. This was a gentle reminder about what truly matters. And then He confirmed it with His Word, illuminating why guarding the heart is so important. Read what God says in Proverbs:
“My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:20-23
No matter what struggles you are facing God seeks your good and His glory. So be encouraged and re-focus on what lies deeper than time, stretches farther than space and is more encompassing than all material pursuits. God’s word is our life. Only then can we truly experience the destiny that is laid up before us.
