As We Go On With Our Lives…
I wrote the piece below based on the Virginia Tech shootings.
As we go on with our lives… people die - eternal souls taken, stripped away while others are given in blind rage and anger and fear.
We listen to these horror stories of individuals on there way to their last moments on earth - as they meet their end at the hands of the ridiculed and tortured… we cry when we hear these true life stories - we call them tragedies and disturbing and the perpetrator heinous…
As we go on with our lives… changing the channel - putting the newspaper down - clicking the mouse the next story of horror… or glamor and fame.
As we go on with our lives… only the ones directly related are broken - we’ve heard their spoken words through tears while others say “Thank God my child is still alive.”
What about the ones who died? What about the one who killed and then committed suicide? What’s going on in our country - in the world - that we stand by and let the injustice reign that leads to similar climatic moments of tragedy? …Columbine, the Amish, all the other places and people we’ve already forgotten and never heard of…
How do we write off individuals who struggle with issues and may even bare the brunt of oppression, scorn and ridicule from others who consider themselves of more value and worth than the “insignificant?”
As we go on with our lives… only stopping for a moment to consider what our eyes have seen and our ears have heard… only for a moment - our mortality - for a moment.
What will we DO? More than words and speeches - what will we Do to ensure not only that tragedies like this never happen again - but that the tragedy before the tragedy never takes place?
As we go on with our lives…
