T.V. actor Malik Yoba to speak at B-CC
Staff Report
DAYTONA BEACH — Actor Malik Yoba, whose work has included regular parts on television’s “The Thief” and “New York Undercover,” is scheduled to speak Thursday at Bethune-Cookman College as part of a two-day conference.
The conference, “Linking Experiences and Opportunities,” is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the college’s Speech Communication and Theatre Arts Department.
Yoba’s keynote speech starts at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center, 698 W. International Speedway Blvd.
In 1996, The New York Times Magazine named the New Yorker one of 30 promising artists under age 30, and that year he won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor.
He recently opened the Soul Cafe, a restaurant in midtown Manhattan.
The conference starts at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. About 5 p.m., Bethune-Cookman alumnus Allen Paul Weaver III, an author who has produced an anthology of poetry, short stories and essays titled “Transition,” will address the students before taking questions.
“Our goal is to give students a chance to meet successful communicators who are living their dreams,” said Kekeli Nuviadenu, department chairman. “We invite students from all disciplines to join us for this conference.”
The conference continues Friday, when Bethune-Cookman students will travel to Eatonville and attend several sessions at the Zora Neal Hurston Festival.
