SPEECH COMMUNICATION & THEATRE ARTS DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES CONFERENCE
Malik Yoba Scheduled Key Note Speaker
Author Allen Paul Weaver III is Plenary Speaker

Daytona Beach, FL — The Bethune-Cookman College Speech Communication and Theatre Arts Department (SCTA) is proud to announce its first annual conference, Linking Experiences and Opportunities scheduled for January 25 and 26, 2007.

“Our goal is to give students a chance to meet successful communicators who are living their dreams,” said Dr. Kekeli Nuviadenu, SCTA Chair. “We invite students from all disciplines to join us for this first conference.”
The two day conference will kick off in the Performing Arts Center with an opening plenary, reception, and key note speaker on Thursday afternoon. The opening plenary will feature alumni author Allen Paul Weaver, III. A reception will immediately follow in the Performing Arts Center Banquet Hall. Key Note speaker actor/author Malik Yoba will address participants in the main auditorium of the Performing Arts Center at 7PM. The second day will introduce students to the Zora Neal Hurston Festival in Eatonville, FL. SCTA majors will attend the Words and Voices Reading Series featuring Raina Leon at 10:30AM, Toni Asante Lightfoot at 11:45AM, and Opal Moore at 1 PM.     

Keynote Speaker Malik Yoba is a familiar face on screen and television, perhaps best recognized as the Harlem detective on New York Undercover. A native New Yorker, he was cited by The New York Times Magazine in 1996 as one of thirty promising artists under the age of thirty and won the NAACP’s 1996 Image Award for Outstanding Actor. Among his other awards are the McDonald’s National Black History Markers of Tomorrow, the National Conference of Black Mayors and Hale House. Yoba recently opened the Soul Cafe, a restaurant in midtown Manhattan.
BCC alumni author Allen Paul Weaver, III has produced an anthology of poetry, short stories, and essays titled Transition. The book recounts major moments and observations from the last ten years of the author’s life. He shares deeply personal aspects of his journey to self discovery. He writes candidly about his life struggles.
