Where is your center? For at least a millenia it was thought that the planets, sun, galaxy and the universe revolved around the earth.  With humanity being the height of God’s creation, it made ’sense’ that the earth would be at the center of creation.  However, it was scientifically proven that, in fact, the earth was not the center around which the universe revolved.  Within our solar system, it was indeed the sun which was the center and its gravitational pull directed all the planets around it… including earth.

Humanity, on earth, may be the height of God’s creation… but it is certainly not the center of God’s creation.  In the great expanse of the universial sky the earth is but a single grain of sand.  Within our own proximity to the sun: 93,000,000 miles… a few miles closer and we would burn up.  A few miles farther away and all life would freeze to death.  If our sun were to be extinguished - all life on earth would come to an end.  As humans within the grand scheme of things, we seem to not be in as much control of our lives as we think.  Our planet must concede a very big portion of its existence, as must the other planets, to the gravitational pull and solar radiation of the sun.  God truly sets our solar system as a wonderful, precise timepiece.

So it is with our individual lives.  We tend to think that everything else revolves around us - that we are at the center of creation and the sun rises and sets based upon our dreams and desires.  But this, simply is not true.  We are connected to one another and we are responsible for one another.  I know we try not to think about this being as independent as we think we are, however God’s Word says ‘if we say we love God whom we have not seen and yet we hate our brother and sister who we see everyday… then we are liars.”  And this is the center of the greater truth: God is our sun around which we revolve.  Our existence depends on our proximity to Christ from whom we receive light to empower our life to great heights, and a gravitational pull ‘of sorts’ to help keep us grounded in reality and not given over to pride and arrogance - as if we were so important that everything needed to revolve around us.  The earth lies at the mercy of the sun and so we lie at the mercy of God.  Just as the sun has a direct bearing on our mortal existence, so Christ has the preeminent bearing on our eternal existence.

Here’s proof that the universe does not revovle around us.  When those close to us die, we may slow for a moment of mourning, but the universe and everything in it continues to go on.

So from what perspective are you and I living our lives?  Selfishly or selflessly?  If we are not the center of God’s creation, then how should we live?  What does God require from us?  Where is your center?  How do we find our center and order our lives around what truly matters in life?  Jesus Christ said, “You must seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness… and everything else you need will be provided.”  (Matthew 6:33  My paraphrase.)

Let me know what you think.
