There were 3 questions that were asked of me this past weekend at a leadership retreat.  Theses 3 questions blew me away and I believe, if answered honestly, they have the ability to begin to bring transformation to our lives.

What makes you happy?  What makes you sad?  What is your passion?

The setting for these questions was one of deep introspection, sitting across from another individual - holding their hands and looking into their eyes - the beginning of a level of intimacy that many of us may not feel comfortable with.  When posed with these questions, our first inclination may be to just give surface answers.  However, I believe that the first part of true growth is for us to be honest with ourselves - to be able to verbalize what we are truly feeling and thinking in our heart and mind.  Facades look great on television, in the movies and on theatre stages - but when the lights are turned off and the production is over - all that is left are empty shells.

My friend Andrew Seltz in his article entitled, The Synchronicity Engine says ”When you make a true decision, you select a course of action.  You cut yourself off from all other options and begin moving.”  What do you think about his statement?  Do you see how it relates to what we’re talking about here?

True decisions are made when you answer real questions, honestly.  This is the first part of true growth.

What makes you happy?  What makes you sad?  What is your passion?

Here are my answers:

I am happiest when I can dream and create.  At heart, I am a Dreamer.  I am an Artist.  I am a Musician.  I am many things.  So when I can envision a better future and a better present - when I can create things that have yet to exist or improve upon what currently does - when I can dream of flight, of peace, of love, of justice… when I can dream of God… I am happy.

I am saddened when I see injustice and individuals mistreated and denied basic rights that are entitled to all human beings.  I am sad when I see others wasting their potential - especially teenagers.  I am sad when I see young people with nothing else to do but hang on the corner all night long and get into mischief.  I am sad when I meet people who love ignorance and don’t want to learn and grow.  I am sad when I meet individuals who allow fear to smother the flames of their dreams.  I am sad when I don’t live up to my full potential.

My passion is to use everything that God has given me to help compel others to discover their God-given dreams!  I believe that God is the biggest dreamer for our lives and has created us for specific purposes and has equipped us with the abilities to accomplish the Vision which lives inside of us - beneath all of the surface layers… beneath all of the facades… at the deepest part of our being where many of us have yet to explore for various reasons - the Vision which seeks to come alive…  this is my passion - to help unlock the doors of the human heart, through the light of Christ, so that the heart, soul, mind and strength of each individual may truly LIVE!

How do I respond to the answers to these questions?  That’s another conversation for another time.  But at least I have taken the first step in answering the questions.  What about you?

What makes you happy?  What makes you sad?  What is your passion?

These are the 3 questions which lead to the scale of Ultimate Weights & Measures. Be honest with your answers - even if the answer is honestly “I don’t know” - and let the journey towards your purpose begin!  - Allen Paul Weaver III
